Types of Plateaus which are found in Tanzania

APlateau is a raised area with a fairly level surface at the top. Plateau is said to have table-like shape.

Plateaus lie between 300 and 2000 meters above the sea leve. Most plateaus are found near the coastal plains.

The large part of Tanzania is covered by plateaus. There are two types os plateaus in Tanzania, which are :-

  • The Nyika Plateau

This lies between the coastal plains in the East and Central plateau. The Nyika plateau is narrow in the north and wide in the south. The Nyika palteau is also called the The Eastern Plateau. It rise from 300 to 1000 meters above the sea level.

Many rivers cross the Nyika plateau towards the Indian Ocean where they empty their water. Example of those rivers are.

  1. Wami river
  2. Rufiji river
  3. and
  4. Pangani river
  • The Central Plateau.

The central plateau rises from 1,000 to 2,000 meters above the sea leve;l. The centarl plateau starts from the foothills of Pare, Usambara, Udzungwa and Uluguru Mountain ranges and spread westwards.

Many regions in Tanzania lie in the central plateau. These regions are:-

  1. Arusha
  2. Manyara
  3. Tabora
  4. Mbeya
  5. Rukwa
  6. Mwanza
  7. Kigoma
  8. Kagera
  9. Morogoro
  10. Dododma
  11. Iringa
  12. Shinyanga
  13. Singida
